Govind Ram Sharma

Govind Ram Sharma was a revolutionary leader and veteran politician from Jammu and Kashmir who served as a Minister in Jammu and Kashmir. He had a long political career spanning over seven decades. His political career began in 1951 as a Panchayat member. Over the decades, he played an active role in state politics and was elected as an MLA from the Akhnoor Assembly constituency twice, in 1987 and 1996.[1][2]

He contested assembly election independently in 1977 and 1987, winning the latter against the NC and INC accord and won with 19,642 votes from Akhnoor constituency. He also contested assembly election in 1983, giving close fight to INC in Akhnoor. In 1996 he won Akhnoor assembly constituency on mandate of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.  He served as the Minister of State for Health and Public Health Engineering (PHE) from 1996 to 2002 under the Farooq Abdullah-led government. Govind Ram Sharma contested his last election in year 2008 as a BJP candidate. His political acumen played a vital role in 2014 election, where he was instrumental in ensuring the BJP’s victory in Akhnoor constituency, a testament to his enduring influence.[3][4]

Throughout his career, Pandit ji’s political journey was marked by a deep, unwavering commitment to public welfare and a sincere desire to uplift the most vulnerable. His advocacy extended beyond mere policies—it was a lifelong mission to ensure that every citizen, regardless of their background, had a voice. A transformative and visionary leader he played a critical role in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir, driving comprehensive development in the region. Under his leadership vital improvements were made in road infrastructure, electricity supply, irrigation systems, and water supply schemes, which laid the foundation for lasting progress. He also worked to create robust employment opportunities and enhance healthcare infrastructure, greatly elevating the standard of living for the people. His steadfast dedication and visionary leadership earned him the admiration of many, and he was hailed as the Sher-E-Akhnoor. He passed away on April 22, 2024, at the age of 95.[5]
