Gabriela de Matos is an Afro-Brazilian architect based in Rio de Janeiro. She analyzes the impacts of architecture and urban design on structural racism and sexism within the context of the African diaspora.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Gabriela de Matos was born in Vale do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais. In 2010, de Matos received her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. She then earned a specialization in Construction Management and Real Estate Assessment before completing her Master’s at the University of São Paulo.[2]
Career
[edit]De Matos has her own architecture firm, and is also currently a professor of architecture and urbanism at Sao-Paulo architecture school Escola da Cidade. Along-side those duties, she leads the Black Architects Project, which creates a catalog of female, black, Brazilian architects. Under this role, she wrote and published Black Architects vol.1 on the subject.[3] She is a former co-president for the Brazilian Institute of Architects — São Paulo (IAB-SP). She continues to research architecture produced in Africa and the diaspora.[4]
Awards and achievements
[edit]De Matos was named IAB-RJ's architect of the year in 2020, and in 2023, she (alongside Paulo Tavares) won the Golden Lion award for Best National Participation. Her written work, Black Architects vol.1, won her the IAB-SP award for Best Architecture Publication.[5]
