Frontier Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located along Dell Range Blvd in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The single-level, 519,471-square-foot (48,260.4 m2) mall opened March 18, 1981.[2] Managed by CBL & Associates Properties of Chattanooga, Tennessee, it is Wyoming's second largest mall, boasting 67 shops, including six anchor stores: Dillard's,[3] JCPenney, JAX Outdoor Gear, Planet Fitness, Appliance Factory Mattress Kingdom, and Jo-Ann.

History

[edit]

The mall's earliest anchor store to open was Sears which planned to open for their grand opening on October 8, 1980, relocating from Downtown Cheyenne in the process.[4]

Some of the earliest interior tenants of the Frontier Mall included Chick-Fil-A, Denim Connection, Foxmoor, Kinney Shoes, Taco Etc., Thom McAn, Western Ranchman Outfitters,[5] and Zales' Jewelers.[6]

CBL added two additional restaurants on the periphery of the land in 2007,[7] Olive Garden and Chipotle.

Chain store Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts would open a new store on September 15, 2011[8] in addition to five other stores across the US that opened at the same time.[9] The Frontier Mall's Jo-Ann store would replace several smaller tenants including Twills,[10] Natural Lites,[11] a former Asian Gifts storefront,[12] and a former RadioShack storefront.[13]

Sports Authority closed their store in 2016 in addition to closing the remaining stores still open after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.[14]

In November 2017, the Frontier Mall's Sears store was announced to close, liquidation starting before the end of the year and the store closing in January 2018.[15][16] In the same month that Sears was announced to close, Planet Fitness was in the process of opening in the former Sports Authority;[17] the new gym would open in February 2018.[18]

JAX Mercantile Company would begin working to open a new JAX Outdoor Gear, Farm and Ranch store in the former Sears space in 2019,[19] opening in late November. The Frontier Mall's JAX store would be the eighth location of the normal, full-line JAX stores.[20] Later in December 2019, America's Best Contacts and Eye Glasses[21] would actively be remodeling the remaining vacant space of the former Sports Authority, opening by the following year with an exterior entry to the store.

Dillard's (West), formerly Joslins, was converted to a clearance center between 2019 and mid-2020 before closing in November 2020; the store floor would be condensed to just the Dillard's (East) by 2020. In early 2023, Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom would begin the process of setting up in the former Dillard's,[22] opening in late May 2023.
