Fraser McReight (born 19 February 1999) is an Australian rugby union player who plays for the Queensland Reds[2] in Super Rugby and the Wallabies. His playing position is openside flanker.
Early career
[edit]McReight played his junior rugby with the Albany Creek Brumbies. He then attended Brisbane Grammar School in Queensland GPS competition, where he played in the 1st XV for three seasons (2014–16), playing openside flanker, number 8 and inside centre. This led to him representing Australian Schools in 2016.[3]
He represented the junior Wallabies twice, in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, McReight led the Junior Wallabies to their first Oceania U20s title, including a 24-0 victory over New Zealand. He then captained the side in 2019 at the u20 Rugby World Cup, losing to France in the final. Over this time, McReight won successive Junior Wallabies' player of the year awards, signing a contract with the Queensland Reds in 2018.
In 2018 McReight made his Super Rugby debut against the ACT Brumbies[4] while also playing for Brothers Old Boys in Queensland Premier Rugby. McReight became a regular in the Reds in 2019, leading to his selection in the Wallabies in 2020.
International career
[edit]McReight made his international debut in the second round of the 2020 Tri Nations Series (a reformatted Rugby Championship due to COVID-19) against New Zealand in Sydney when Harry Wilson (rugby union) was substituted off for him in the 67th minute of the game in which the Wallabies lost 43 to 5.[5] McReight scored his first test try against Argentina in round one of the 2021/22 Rugby Championship.[6]
McReight played a single Test in 2021 again as a replacement, against New Zealand at Eden Park. He later played eight Tests including six as the starting openside flanker, in 2022, making his first run-on XV appearance in the 1st Test, 41-26 victory over Argentina in Mendoza.[3] McReight played in three games in the lead up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup, all starting at openside flanker.
McReight was included in the Wallabies 2023 Rugby World Cup squad, playing in each game, three in the starting XV and one off the bench.
