Final points (Latvian: Gala punkti), also Termini is a Latvian documentary film of 2024 directed by Laila Pakalniņa.[1]

The film is included in the program of the Riga International Film Festival.[2]

Plot

[edit]

The passing intimacy. Going home, to work, to a friend's house, to buy dinner, or maybe even to the cinema. Through the change of seasons, we meet passengers, they drive, sit, wait, get bored, maybe sometimes look less out of the windows than at the small screens, but always reach their destination. Alongside them are kiosk vendors, vegetable and flower sellers, janitors and drivers, whose daily rituals complement the trajectories of travelers' movements. Singing public transport stops as intimate islands of crossing, we see Riga's neighborhoods in an unexpected, moving visual opus of queues.[3]

Critical response

[edit]

Film critic Dmitrijs Rancevs gave the film a positive review. In his opinion, "What's really going on here is this. It's no coincidence that a spring shot can be joined with a scene of a snowy sidewalk, and autumn can transition into summer with an editing junction. This is done intentionally: Pakalniņa thus allows us to feel the unity of place and time, which is separate from the usual chronological duration, and which is found in these 71 minutes".[4] At the same time, Ieva Ozoliņa believes that "Whispering is louder than shouting. The strength of 'Final points' is a clean form and a minimal range of artistic techniques".[5]
