Summary

Description
English: Beyer, Garratt locomotive William Francis at the Garratt 100 festival in 2014.

This locomotive was built by Beyer, Peacock & Company in 1937 to work at Baddesley Colliery at Atherstone, Warwickshire, UK. It was named after Sir William Francis Dugdale, son of the founder of the colliery. The colliery line ran from the West Coast main line in the Trent Valley and rose about 240ft in a distance just short of two miles – an average gradient of 1 in 47 and with 1 in 23 at its steepest grades.

The locomotive’s number, 6841, is the Beyer, Peacock works number. It is virtually identical to the other three Garratt locomotives that Beyer, Peacock manufactured for industrial service in the UK. Last steamed in 1980, it is the only surviving standard-gauge Garratt in Britain. As of 2024 it was on static display at [Bressingham Steam and Gardens].
