English: A whitebark pine-dominated forest in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Whitebark pine is a tree species imperiled by climate change, bark beetles and disease. The species was recently listed under the US Endangered Species Act due to its rapid decline throughout North America. It provides critical habitat for a diversity of wildlife, including grizzly bears, birds, and squirrels, and regions with high mortality experience dramatic shifts in water and nutrient cycling.
