English: A heat transfer fluid (red) flows through a cooling jacket surrounding the vertical sides of a batch reactor. There may be only one coil (as illustrated), or there may be multiple jackets with each having their own input and output of heat transfer fluid. In this illustration, the jacket extends from near the bottom of the reactor to the level of the reactants (yellow). The jacket may be filled with raschig rings to provide a tortuous flow path for the heat transfer fluid. The impeller (blue) spins to consistently distribute the heat throughout the vessel.
