| Description |
An intricately fashioned gold reliquary cross. The front of the cross is decorated with filigree eight- petalled flowers within circles and eight pearls. The crucifix figure is in enamelled gold. The reverse side of the cross has similar filigree and enamelled circular panels showing the Four Evangelists while in the centre of the cross there is a larger panel of the Lamb of God. In the interior compartment is a sealed paper packet on which is written: ex sanguine Thomae Canterburiae archaeopiscopi. This inscription indicates that it may also have contained a relic of St Thomas à Becket, who was killed in his cathedral at Canterbury in 1170. Spanish/English. |

| Object history | File of material relating to the Becket reliquary pendant cross. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from publication entitled ’50 Treasures from the Hunt Collection’ (Limerick: Hunt Museum Executive, 1993) by Patrick Doran comprising description of the cross; notes (c. 1965) on headed notepaper of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (England) conveying facts about the Sibthorp family, Canwick hall, Lincolnshire; notes (date unspecified) by Sir Ralph Lawson, Catterick hall, Catterick, which details the inscriptions on the cross, one of which is, ‘ECCE UT IMITERIS COMPATERE UT CON REGNES.’ Another inscription, according to annotation in different hand on Lawsons note, is said to be adapted by the Vexilla Regis. Also present is a list of the names of the saints of whom there are relics in the cross. Relic of the true cross also present; a third note (date unspecified) by Lawson contains sketch of a seal on one of the relics inside the cross; note (date unspecified) which reads: ‘grave in Chapter House / opened 1826 / low mitre, ring and ornaments / conveyed for Fr. Spratt / 5 o ? keo bed by an? / Wakeman? 1890 / Vol 21 p. 43 / notes found in Jacks [John Hunt, Senior] papers’; postscript [to letter] (date unspecified) on headed notepaper of the Victoria and Albert Museum initialled [G.S.] and which states: ‘I cannot trace any record of a sale of the Cardinal of York’s effects in 1807. Presumably, no catalogue was issued or else none is known to survive. The Vatican Library might help with this.’ Also, note (date unspecified) which makes references to Saint Zachary, Pope Confessor; Zachary, the prophet; and Zacharias, the father of Our Lady. In relation to Zachary, the prophet, the note directs the reader to ‘Duianderie for monstrance with figure of him in Victoria & Albert’; information card (date unspecified) with note on verso which reads: ‘O/L to BM. NS. Amazed. 16th century?. Relic in modern paper wrapping + with modern handwriting, which means it hasn’t been in cross for long. Enamel = 15th century?, but cross makes it later, c. 1500. Rond bois (?) enamel. Original pearls. ‘marvellons’ gold wire. | ||||||||||||||||||||
