DescriptionPort Pirie smelters -- coming off shift circa 1904 (SLSA B 11617).jpg
English: Smelter workers walking down Ellen Street, the main street of Port Pirie, at the end of their shift. The BHP smelter was built in 1889 alongside an existing one built by British Broken Hill Blocks mining company. Ahead (under the largest smokestack) are the railway tracks and marshalling yards of the smelters; fanning out to the right are many sidings for goods (mainly agricultural products), to be exported by ships, also visible at right.
The image originates in a low-resolution download available free of charge from the State Library of South Australia website (see “Source”). The library's web page states that a higher-resolution image is available for purchase from them. I improved some exposure, contrast and colour values and removed some blemishes and chemical marks before uploading to Wikimedia Commons. The image with original flaws is available from the SLSA website cited above.
