Summary

Description Ornithostaphylos oppositifolia—Baja birdbush. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 2.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA; common elsewhere). Also, listed by the State of California as Endangered . The one United States population of about 100 plants just west of the border crossing at San Ysidro has suffered great collateral damage as the result of the Mexican immigration debate. Many plants were moved when the border fence was built. These and those that remain in place are vulnerable to human activity, intentional or not. Luckily for the species, Baja birdbush is relatively secure in Baja California. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
