Color plate illustrates an early method of bleaching cotton and linen goods on lawns. Two women stand in a vast landscape holding watering cans over strips of white cloth. Decorative frame is bordered by foliage and features a vignette containing a cherub holding a white cloth. Plate is entitled "Bleaching."

This plate is from John Howard Appleton's (1844-1930) Chemistry, Developed by Facts and Principles Drawn Chiefly from the Non-Metals, published in 1884, intended as an introduction to the study of chemistry.
