35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Scandentia; Family: Tupaiidae; Genus: Anathana; Genus species: Anathana ellioti. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 16-18 cm; Identification: The mandras tree shrew is brown with a pale stripe on each shoulder. Its ears are relatively large; Habitat: Rain forests, woodlands; Diet: Omnivore: insects, fruit; Reproduction: Gestation of mandras tree shrews is about 45 days. The female gives birth over a period of 1-5 days, while the male is busy making a nest made of up to 400 leaves. Usually two young are born, but it may be 1-3. The young leave the nest when they are four weeks old; Social Structure: The mandras tree shrew is mainly solitary, but some are gregarious, living in family groups; Behavior: Mandras tree shrews are arboreal and terrestrial and are most active at night; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Mandras tree shrews are one of several species that are currently giving taxonomists troubles. They used to be classified as primates because they are arboreal and their eyes are located in the front of their heads. However, scientists have also put them with insectivores because of their diet. They will most likely end up as part of a new order.
