English: Lemuel Whitley Diggs spent his career seeking a cure for sickle cell anemia. ...he was not only interested in the physiological aspects of the disease, but also in the patient’s ability to learn in school, to hold a job, and to continue in their home life. To this end, he created a database on four-by-six-inch index cards of everyone in the Memphis region, including Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi ... Photograph from the 1950s.
