English: Statue in Largo da Oliveira in Centro Histórico de Guimarães
Português: Estátua com duas caras. Chamam-lhe "o Guimarães", como aparece na maioria das referências históricas, e tem duas caras. Este facto é muitas vezes usado para aludir aos vimaranenses como gente de "duas caras", ou seja, desonestos.
Barroso da Fonte, jornalista e historiador, escreve, no livro "Guimarães e as duas caras", que esta estátua representa as duas frentes de batalha em Ceuta, em 1415: uma para os vimaranenses e outra para o povo de Barcelos. Segundo esta versão, "os vimaranenses teriam cumprido a sua missão e, devido à falta de coragem do povo de Barcelos, teriam ainda dado apoio na "cara" que lhes dizia respeito". O presidente da Sociedade Martins Sarmento, Amaro das Neves, salienta a árvore da oliveira a dominar um leão, imagem que figura no escudo da estátua. A oliveira representa Guimarães e o leão, que ainda hoje é figura das armas reais espanholas, representa Espanha. Conclui o professor que a estátua representa "a oliveira que venceu o leão". Ou seja, "Guimarães que resiste e que vence Espanha, numa referência à contribuição desta terra para a génese da nacionalidade portuguesa". |
