Description
English: This painting shows a woman in a black dress seated in an armchair or sofa. The background is dark brown with a brighter section to the left, suggesting a window. The painting is a typical example of Degas' female portraits from this period, which were often given neutral titles that did not mention the name of the model. Degas was one of the Impressionists, but his works and artistic ideals differed somewhat from those of the group in general. He was not, for instance, keen on plein-air painting, and he used a more subdued palette than his colleagues Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot.
