Original caption |
Note: For documentary purposes the original description has been retained. Factual corrections and alternative descriptions are encouraged separately from the original description. |

Description |
English: "Japanese playing cards" now identified as Chinese. Throughout the years, the cards have been assumed to be Japanese; someone gave them a small label at the beginning of the 19th century on which it was written "11 Japanese cards". They are in fact Chinese, which explains why Japanese people asked to read them could never understand the text on the cards.
They are used to play the game Ma Diao which is an early version of Mahjong. The deck is not complete, and would normally contain 40 cards. The eleven cards are part of the "tong" (coins) and "suo" (bands) as well as some face cards from the "wan" suit (a range of coins) and illustrate some of the 108 robbers in "Tales from the swamps", popular writings from the 14th century. |
