Description |
Drawing by Katy Schimert, Lurking Octopus (watercolor on paper, 51" x 99.5", 2014). The image illustrates Katy Schimert's career-long body of watercolor drawings, which she has created alongside her sculptural, film and video and installation work. Her drawings have been described as delicate, diagrammatic and dynamic in their topographies and have depicted landscapes, figures, natural forms, cryptic narratives and schema. This work is from her exhibition, "Camouflage, Ink and Silence," which explored a mythical, undersea (often transparent) octopus in a state of flux with the ocean; the large watercolors divide the ocean into a series of tightly fit, subtly modulated striations, creating a play between surface patterning and depth of field and a sense of filtered light that reads like pieces of colored or shattered glass. This work and similar works have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications, and acquired by museums. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a career-long body of work in Katy Schimert's art: her watercolor drawings, which she has created alongside her sculptural, film and video and installation work. Her drawings have been described as delicate, diagrammatic and dynamic in their topographies; they are sometimes noted as the fullest expression of the complexities and possibilities in her work. They have depicted landscapes, figures, natural forms, cryptic narratives and schema, exploring visionary themes invoking myth, intuition, scientific and social knowledge, and female bodily experience. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key component of her artistic output, which brought ongoing recognition through exhibition in major venues, coverage by major critics in publications and books, and museum acquisitions. Schimert's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |
