The image may well be in the public domain, but am unable to ascertain that it was published. According to the source (Pennington, Estill Curtis (2011). Lessons in Likeness: Portrait Painters in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley, 1802-1920: Featuring Works from the Filson Historical Society. Lexington, Kentucky: University Press of Kentucky. ISBN 0-8131-2612-6 page 113) Bond disappeared in 1864. According to the The Athenaeum [1] all of his works are in the public domain. However, I am unable to determine if they were ever published before the Filson Historical Society acquired them in 1974 [2]. It may well be that the work was published as an 1861 newspaper article [3] states that her likeness was featured in the Nashville-based Home Circle newspaper's February 1861 issue. I have been unable to find a copy of that newspaper to determine if it was the same portrait. |
