Description
Pris 2.000 Kr.Pair of large porcelain jars and lids, decorated with moulded relief, lacquer, underglaze blue, overglaze enamels and gilding; the stands laterJapan, Arita kilns, c.1700. In 1650, the Dutch East India Company started to source porcelain for Europe in Japan, following the collapse of the Chinese Ming dynasty. Supplies quickly grew, and between 1659 and 1757 the Arita kilns exported enormous quantities of porcelains. Some pieces, like these huge vases, were special orders for European royalty. They are luxury items that include relief moulding and lacquer applied to pre-fired blue-and-white porcelain, and lavish gilding. They once belonged to King Carl XV of Sweden (1826-1872), were sold at auction to Carl Adolf Sterky (1810-1891) and then sold by his wife to Bukowskis, where Wilhelmina bought them in 1896.
