English: During the Chicxulub asteroid impact, 66 million years ago, millions of tons of molten and vaporized rock were ejected into the atmosphere. As these materials cooled, they were distributed throughout the planet in the form of glass droplets. The impact is the most likely cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. These glass spherules were collected on Gorgonilla Island in the Colombian Pacific and are the best preserved in the world.
Photos taken under a stereo microscope. Different shapes and structures are observed. The purity of the glass allows to see bubbles and fragments of unmelted materials inside the spherules. The work is part of the doctoral research of Colombian geologist Hermann Bermudez.
