Purpose of use

The clip is used to illustrate the way in which the director used doubles of his characters to explore dualism, in this case the dual nature of the film's two active murderers. As described in the article, Neal and Giermani are set up as both doubles and mirrors of one another; the shot precedes the moment where the former kills the latter. Analysis of the film stressed the doubling of the characters; Neal appropriates Giermani's role as investigator, and in this shot finally makes him "go away"; this shot makes literal the culmination of his attempts to replace him.
