Summary

Description
English: Selected airfoils in nature and various vehicles, with their approximate chord length indicated.

Sources for the shapes of the airfoils:

  • Low-speed ULM wing: drawn over own photo of low-cost, low-speed ultralight
  • Airliner: Profile of an A-321 wing at root, as represented in Bertin 2009[1]
  • Supersonic interceptor: Profile of an F-104 wing at root, drawn over own photo of a wing section exhibited in the Deutsches Museum
  • Blackbird : as shown in Alexander 2002[2] (very approximate drawing on original, chord completely estimated)
  • Dragonfly: loosely interpreted from data, photo and diagram in Hertel 1966[3]. Section roughly mid-wing.
  • Dolphin flipper fin: drawn based on CT scan shown in Fish & al. 2008[4], chord estimated.
  • Sailboat mainsail: Drawing based on own knowledge & observation.
  • Turbine blade: Drawing based on multiple representations in aeronautical propulsion textbooks.
  • Turbofan fan blade: Drawing based on own knowledge & observation, inspired from Rolls-Royce 2005[5].
