English: Fragment of The Death of Socrates. Close-up of Socrates' hand reaching for the cup of water poisoned with Conium maculatum, also known as hemlock. In ancient Greece, hemlock was sometimes respectfully offered to prosecuted prisoners as a way for them to carry out their own execution. See also: Trial of Socrates.
