Description
Seine frühere Bezeichnung "Die gescheiterte Hoffnung" erhielt das Bild von dem Schiff gleichen Namens auf einer früheren Fassung des Bildes, die heute verloren ist. Der Titel passt hingegen auch zu diesem ungewöhnlichen Bild, werden doch in der Malerei seit jeher Motive aus der Seefahrt mit dem menschlichen Lebensweg und Schicksal verknüpft. Die Deutungen sind - wie immer bei Friedrich - ganz verschiedenartig und reichen weit über die bloße Darstellung einer Schiffskatastrophe hinaus. Zu den religiösen Deutungen sind inzwischen auch vermehrt politische Interpretationen getreten. Sicher ist, dass Friedrich ein Bild der Vernichtung, Verlassenheit, Erstarrung und erbarmungslosen Kälte gemalt hat, in dem die Hoffnung jedoch noch nicht ganz verloren gegangen ist: in dem aufbrechenden leuchtend blauen Himmel funkelt ein kleiner Stern. Angeregt wurde Friedrich zu seiner Bilderfindung vermutlich von den Entdeckungsreisen des Engländers Edward William Parry, der mehrmals Expeditionen ins Nordpolargebiet unternahm.
