Ella Mai Lloyd (born 1 July 2005) is a British[1] racing driver from Wales[2] who will be competing in the 2025 season of F1 Academy for Rodin Motorsport as a member of the McLaren Driver Development Program. She previously competed in the 2024 F4 British Championship, and was the runner up of the 2023 Ginetta GT5 Challenge.[2]
Career
[edit]Ginetta Junior Championship
[edit]Ella Lloyd began her racing career in the 2022 Ginetta Junior Championship.[3] She scored points in 15 of 25 races, with a best finish of 11th. She ended the season in 21st, and as the 10th placed rookie.
Ginetta GT5 Challenge
[edit]Lloyd was chosen for the 2023 Motorsport UK Academy Futures program.[4] In 2023, she moved up to the Ginetta GT5 Challenge with Xentek Motorsport.[5] She finished the season in second place, with 10 wins and 17 podiums.[6]
Formula Winter Series
[edit]Lloyd made her single-seater debut in the 2024 Formula Winter Series, driving for Rodin Motorsport.[7] In her debut weekend she had her best qualifying time deleted for causing a red flag, which meant she started in 38th. She made up more than 30 positions over the three races, finishing in 21st, 20th, and 22nd.[8] Lloyd struggled in the next round, with weather and contact during the race limiting her results, although she qualified in 18th for race 3.[9]
F4 British Championship
[edit]Continuing with Motorsport UK Academy Futures for 2024, she joined JHR Developments for the 2024 British F4 Championship.[10][11]
At the first round at Donington Park, she came in 8th and 7th, but the third round was cancelled due to weather concerns. The second round at Brands Hatch was a round to forget, retiring from the first round after clipping a slow-moving Mika Abrahams from the side, who was fourth on the grid, causing Lloyd to be sent into the barriers at Paddock Hill. At the second round she finished 12th but made up nine places, and came 20th in the third round. Her results perked up at Snetterton and Thruxton, coming in 7th and 10th in the first races respectively.[12]
Lloyd achieved her best result so far at Silverstone Circuit, coming in 5th in the first round, but beated that result in the reverse grid race, getting her maiden podium in single-seaters and the series, with a second place. Lloyd achieved that result after starting in pole position in a chaotic safety car impacted, reverse grid race, but was passed by teammate Leo Robinson, who instead took the win. They got JHR Developments first 1–2 of the season, Lloyd topped off the round with points grabbing 7th place.[13]
At Zandvoort she came 5th and 7th in the second and third races, and after starting from 12th position the first race at Knockhill, she retired from the race after getting stuck in a gravel trap, once making contact with Kai Daryanani. At the second round, she and teammate Robinson got JHR Developments second 1–2, with Lloyd starting from pole position at the reverse grid race, but similar to Silverstone, Robinson would pass her and take the win. Lloyd was unable to start the third race, so didn't contest it.[14][15]
The next round at Donington Park had four rounds to make up for the weather stricken cancelled one at the first round, she retired from the first race due to a gravel trap mishap and came third in the third race, adding another podium to her tally.[16][17]
Lloyd didn't compete in the next round at Silverstone, due to getting a callup in the 2024 F1 Academy season as a wildcard. At the final round in Brands Hatch, while also had a extra round added due to another cancelled race the previous round for weather concerns. She came 12th in the first race, but was unable to compete in the second race, with it being a added race to make up for the previous rounds cancelled race, which Lloyd didn't take part it. The Welshwoman got her final podium of the season, with a second place at the third round, and in the final round of the season she came in 9th. Lloyd finished the championship in 11th position with 99 points, scoring 4 podiums.[18]
F1 Academy

2024 season
[edit]Lloyd competed as the wildcard entry for the fifth round of the 2024 season of F1 Academy at Singapore.[19] She finished Race 1 in 6th but was classified 9th after receiving a penalty for a false start.[20] She finished Race 2 in 7th.[21]
2025 season
[edit]On 8 October 2024, it was announced that Lloyd would be entering the 2025 season with Rodin Motorsport and will represent McLaren after joining the McLaren Driver Development Program.[22]
Formula E
[edit]After being announced as a McLaren Driver Development Program driver, Lloyd and McLaren's 2024 F1 Academy season driver Bianca Bustamante were confirmed as the line-up for the McLaren Formula E Team women's test pre-season testing for the 2024–25 season in Formula E.[23]
Personal life
[edit]Besides racing, Lloyd has also competed in skiing and show jumping. Her father, Chris Lloyd, competed in the 2018 Paralympics in downhill skiing and Super-G.[24]
