Dunlap is an unincorporated community in Travis County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 80 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.

History

It bears the name of William Dunlap Hunter, who took over as postmaster in 1886 after the community was given a post office. Mail for the settlement was sent to Austin after the post office was shut down in 1901. Dunlap had two establishments and 30 residents during the start of the 1890s. By the early 1930s, it had 50 residents; by the late 1940s, it had 150. From the middle of the 1960s through the year 2000, Dunlap claimed an 80-person population.[2]

Dunlap is located on Farm to Market Road 969, 12 mi (19 km) east of Austin in eastern Travis County.[2]

Education

Today, the community is served by the Del Valle Independent School District. Schools that serve the community are Joseph Gilbert Elementary School, Dailey Middle School, and Del Valle High School.
