Comments from Optimist on the run:
[edit]- The level of detail for the layout around Carlisle seems excessive compared with other complex areas (e.g. Crewe, Rugby, Willesden).
- There are still a number of off-going lines to be identified, particularly between Warrington and Preston.
- The first instance of article (e.g. Great Central Railway) reading from top to bottom should be linked. At present it's the last one for the GCR, and possibly others (understandable as this was dproduced from London northwards).
- I don't have a rail atlas to hand to check the layout, but the Watford High Street loop must be wrong, as at present it doesn't allow a direct route to Watford Junction.
- The two lines to Market Harborough from the Northampton Loop are closed. (I haven't checked all lines - I'm just doing this from memory at the moment).
I'd wondered about using parallel track icons (e.g. ) to show the DC lines between Euston and the Watford loop. What do others think?
Hope you don't think I'm being too critical - I can see there's a lot of work gone into this from Mjroots. I'd hoped to do some of it myself, but just been too busy recently. I might have a chance to play on it tomorrow evening. An optimist on the run! 12:48, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
- Well, the diagram is always capable of improvement. As I've said at UKT, I've been working from Jowett's Railway Atlas. For those who haven't got Jowett's, the 1940s and 1950s OS maps are available online. Euston is here, and you can navigate using the arrows. Best to turn the markers off though. Re Carlisle, it is complicated because the myriad of avoiding lines made it so. The diagram is slightly simplified to the actual layout, but gives the best representation within the confines of the available icons. The area around Wigan is also complicated, and I'll do that in due course.
- Once the main spine is in from London to Glasgow, we can discuss what other lines we wish to cover. These may be added if it proves feasible, but it may not be possible to add all lines due to the constraints of available space. Mjroots (talk) 19:31, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
- Forgot to mention, current status can be checked via Google Earth. Mjroots (talk) 19:55, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Euston, we have a problem!
[edit]I've finished expanding the diagram to Glasgow Central, but there's a problem. The template limits have been exceeded. This means we'll probably have to split the diagram into two sections. I'd suggest a split at Crewe (which would be on both split diagrams). Mjroots (talk) 18:53, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
- I've split it to User:Optimist on the run/WCML South and User:Optimist on the run/WCML North, but I'm having timeout issues with the northern section even with the split. It might be worth splitting at Carlisle, or the Scottish border, as well. An optimist on the run! 19:40, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
South section
[edit]I've just about finished with this. It should be complete and up to date with the exception of a few relatively short tunnels. Mjroots (talk) 20:01, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
3-way split
[edit]If the diagram is to be split in three, I'd suggest Euston-Nuneaton (south), Nuneaton-Preston (central) and Preston-Glasgow (North). Mjroots (talk) 10:06, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- I would suggest more Euston-Rugby and Rugby-Preston etc. Simply south...... catching SNOWballs for just 6 years 15:38, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- I was going to split the north section at Carlisle initially - when they're all complete we can compare them for size and move sections about to balance them up a bit. An optimist on the run! 20:13, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- That's fine, how close are we to release? Mjroots (talk) 20:22, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- As far as I'm concerned the south section is nearly complete - I want to add the Crewe independent lines, and I'm waiting for a response from the snowball catcher about the Queen's Park area, but apart from that I'm happy with it. I haven't looked much at the north section yet. An optimist on the run! 20:41, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'd prefer that we release all three diagrams together, rather than one at a time. Mjroots (talk) 21:22, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- {{Trent Valley Line}} i.e. isn't it already released? Simply south...... catching SNOWballs for just 6 years 21:28, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- I wasn't planning on releasing it till everyone's happy with the complete set. I won't be doing Crewe tonight now, and I'm busy over the weekend so it'll be next week before I can work on it again. I see there's an anon doing some tweaks on the junctions as well. An optimist on the run! 22:11, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Norton Bridge
[edit]Should Norton Bridge be depicted as an open or closed station? An optimist on the run! 09:37, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- Technically, it's open, but de facto it's closed. No objection here to marking it as closed. Mjroots (talk) 08:20, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- I've left it as open, but added a bus icon and note. An optimist on the run! 13:15, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
