Importance of Lists on Wikipedia
[edit]Lists of schools play a crucial role in research focused on evaluating the distribution and educational landscape of a specific region. They provide valuable data for analyzing regional trends, identifying gaps, and understanding the overall structure of the education system in a given area.
Having comprehensive lists of schools on Wikipedia is particularly important for several reasons:
- Public Accessibility: Wikipedia is a widely accessible platform, allowing general users, students, researchers, and policymakers to easily view and gather information about schools in different regions. These lists democratize access to educational data.
- Global Research Utility: For researchers worldwide, Wikipedia's lists of schools serve as an essential starting point for regional educational studies, enabling assessments of school distribution, educational coverage, and infrastructure across diverse areas.
- Data Integrity and Cross-referencing: Wikipedia’s emphasis on verifiable and well-sourced content ensures that school lists are not only comprehensive but reliable. This makes them a valuable resource for both casual users and academic research.
- Cultural and Educational Mapping: The presence of school lists on Wikipedia contributes to a clearer picture of regional education landscapes, supporting studies on equity, access to education, and regional development.
Even in Thailand, with its thousands of schools, Wikipedia's current list covers only a fraction of them. This is a community-driven work in progress, aiming to gather all relevant information in one central place, making it much easier for researchers to access data. Over time, more schools will be added to the list. While many countries already have extensive Wikipedia lists of schools, only a few are linked to individual school pages, limiting the depth of information available for researchers. Some schools do have their own Wikipedia pages, which makes linking and cross-referencing easy. However, for schools without pages, it is essential to link to credible sources of information. Many schools, particularly smaller ones, may not have the funds to maintain their own websites, or may not have one at all. It is crucial that these schools are still mentioned on Wikipedia to provide a comprehensive view of the true spread of schools and their structures, allowing researchers to conduct more accurate and inclusive studies.
Thailand is currently at a significant milestone in its educational development, particularly with the government’s recent commitment to expanding the Montessori approach in public schools. In 2023, the Thai government signed an agreement to implement Montessori education in more schools, marking a crucial step toward improving the country’s educational system. This initiative reflects Thailand’s ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the quality of education across the country. Highlighting these efforts on Wikipedia is of public interest, not just for researchers, but for anyone interested in global educational advancements. It would be a disservice to both Thailand and the Montessori community if such important progress were not documented on a global platform like Wikipedia, especially considering that the mother of Wikipedia's founder ran a Montessori school herself.
However, discussions surrounding educational topics on Wikipedia often reveal that those commenting and making decisions on the content seem to lack a deep understanding of the subject. Unfortunately, some individuals behave in a controlling manner, disregarding the community-driven nature of Wikipedia. These individuals forget that Wikipedia relies on knowledgeable contributors to both write and review content. It is troubling that people with no expertise in the field often propose deletions simply because they feel uncomfortable with the material. Instead of hastily suggesting deletion, it would be far more productive to involve experts who can assess whether the information is valuable to the general public and researchers alike.
One notable example is the recent "outsourcing" of the list of Montessori schools in Thailand and the interactive map showing the regional distribution of these schools. These resources were moved to separate pages, though they belong together and would be more beneficial on a single, comprehensive page. The individual responsible for creating this content is a highly respected international speaker with decades of experience, often presenting at conferences on various educational topics. Despite this, some contributors appear to have personal biases, repeatedly suggesting deletions without providing specific reasons, relying instead on generic complaints. Such behavior goes against the collaborative spirit of Wikipedia.
Moderators who act in this way—consistently rejecting or obstructing valuable contributions without due consideration—should be reviewed to ensure that Wikipedia remains a platform driven by shared knowledge and expertise, just as it was intended when it began. Only by respecting the contributions of subject matter experts can Wikipedia continue to serve as a reliable and comprehensive resource for the world. Apapococ (talk) 04:16, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
