Notability

[edit]

Hey you pinged me on my talk page about this article.

Yeah I suspect Perry is notable... thought one thing I'm sort of thinking is what has she don't outside of a single book. She's a journalist, but I'm not sure that should really make you notable. Being a columnist is probably more notable - particularly if people respond to her.

I guess there's her work on extreme sexual violence and her (new) podcast. I doubt her podcasts is quite notable yet. Her sexual violence work maybe be.

There's might be other stuff that she's done. I guess she's been doing the rounds in the media... but that might still belong in the book page.

If we an find a secon thing she's done - or a bunch of stuff about the violence work I think this page is definitely notable. Also, I sort of agree that I get the impression that "her book is her" in some regards, so perhaps that is an argument for this page. Talpedia (talk) 21:34, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I found a source about her work on sexual violence... which might be enough to justify this pages existence.
I tried finding other pages about her historically. It's interesting searchingn or a journalist because everythihng is written *by* her - not about her. Talpedia (talk) 22:00, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the moment I've added a redirect to the The Case Against the Sexual Revolution. We'll see if I or anyone else feels moved to fix this. Should she write a second book I imagine we will want a page on her directly. Talpedia (talk) 13:32, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve added some sources that might help expand the article. Do you think it would be appropriate to make a “views” section? There are likely subjects she’s commented on that are outside the purview of the book. Thriley (talk) 20:22, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be valuable. The issue I had is that there were when I looked, more things written *by* Perry than about her... and I got the impression that perhaps people didn't feel the need to write about the views of someone who spent a lot of time published her views in newspapers.
What are the best practices surrounding summarizing primary sources ourselves? Also time has passed, so perhaps there is more about rather than by Perry Talpedia 08:55, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there anything out there about her education or where she was raised? Thriley (talk) 19:16, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Which degrees were received?

[edit]

I find it strange that university degrees are alluded to but not specified. Which degrees were received? Without that, I don't think it is a good idea to list universities in the biography box. I see a reference provided for "a degree" from SOAS (or whatever it is called). However, the article is behind a paywall. Is there any way you could provide a more accessible link? Surely she has a biography somewhere that specifies which degrees (if any) were obtained.Myatrrcc (talk) 03:33, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Myatrrcc
This article in The Times indicates that Louise Perry gained a degree in Women's Studies from School of Oriental and African Studies in London; which Perry confirmed in one of her columns in 2020. I know she has debated at the Oxford Union, from this news article, but I haven't seen anything to suggest she did a Masters degree there. I think we go with what is clearly reported.

This source says “Perry worked in a rape crisis centre after she had finished her degree in Women’s Studies at Oxford” : [1]. Thriley (talk) 03:07, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, noticed that. All the other sources (particularly the Times article that is cited) say it was SOAS. And while we must always be careful of primary sources, I think it is pertinent that in Perry's own writing she in the Spectator she says she went to SOAS. There is a information box down there saying “This article needs additional or more specific categories”. I already added more. Maybe it's enough? Mlody1312 (talk) 06:44, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
