References
[edit]- this article is borderline vanity article without proper references for verifiability. If these could be added in a references or external links section that would make this piece more encyclopedic, esp. if the creator of this article (and most of the edits) would sign up to Wikipedia and actually log in.
- Also may have to double check qualification under WP:BIO, although probably this individual qualifies.

Vanity
[edit]- Article appears to be by author, or an acquaintance, as all edits of the related (presumably dynamic) IPs are only on three articles: the author, and an article each for two of his publications-- otherwise the editor is not a wikipedian.
- therefore also violates the no original research rule of Wikipedia
- consider for afd as vanity article/self-promotionSantaduck 09:05, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

- I removed the reviews again. A quote is fine, but adding the entire review is a copyright violation. As the publisher of the books of the authors, it is difficult for you to be neutral, and your additions look to me more like advertising than an encyclopedia. Please restrain yourself more, the article may still be listed for deletion. -- Chris 73 | Talk 08:43, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Quick Question
[edit]@BuySomeApples one question re this edit. I'd added the line in works because the citations in the subheaders were breaking the TOC. Is there another way you suggest to cover it, or you don't think his list of publications needs sourcing? Not disagreeing with your edit, just clarifying the why on mine. Star Mississippi 22:46, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Star Mississippi: I was cutting down the bibliography and awards list to only include the stuff sourced in the body, but I'll put that line back in. BuySomeApples (talk) 22:51, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Gotcha and thanks @BuySomeApples. Open to other solutions too which would help with the redundancy that seems to be an issue with authors' articles. Star Mississippi 22:54, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
Three best sources
[edit]@Alpiner123 you can list them here. I would suggest you use a list format (copy and overwrite my text below)
- Source 1: [1]
- Source 2 Info [2]
- Source 3 info [3]
optional Source 4-5 (per BuySomeApples request) 4. [4]
5. [5]
Let me know if this helps. Star Mississippi 17:03, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@User:Star Mississippi @BuySomeApples Yes, that’s what we needed. I have double-checked all links. Thanks, all. Alpiner123 (talk) 17:44, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks @Alpiner123. I can confirm the others besides Gale work for me, technical wise. Maybe I can find that through another route. What's the title/publication? Thanks! Star Mississippi 18:33, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- This article was draftified as a result of AFD so unless something's changed significantly shouldn't this go to deletion review instead of AFC? Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:35, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- It is AFC as per WP:DRAFTIFY. Where did you read about the process of taking to deletion review? Jay (talk) 18:51, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oops, sorry I missed that "Authors should try to understand and respond to the reason for moving to draft status, and then use the AfC submission process to have the page moved back to mainspace". I assumed deletion review was needed just like for pages deleted completely. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:02, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Crouch, Swale. I was deleting admin and we've worked on this with Mr. Wilson on his talk page. It's substantially different than what was reviewed at AfD, so a DRV wouldn't really be applicable and likely would close without action or incubate in draft. Because he has a disclosed COI, we thought AfC was best. I am not reviewing it as I was the deleting admin and have been involved in its incubation, but am on board with restoration if accepted by AFC. Star Mississippi 18:51, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Star Mississippi and Alpiner123: this list looks good. I agree with Star that all of the sources are good, with the exception of the Gale authors list. Overall I think this page meets notability guidelines and could be accepted now. However, it could probably be expanded a bit if you want before publishing. It sounds like you aren't quite satisfied with the current version's brevity, but you have access to paywalled and offline sources which help with adding more detail (as long as it's not promotional). I just left a message about how to do this on your talk page. BuySomeApples (talk) 21:20, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@Star Mississippi and BuySomeApples: Very weird about the Gale Literature: Contemporary Authors listing. I’ve been able to get on without paywall at this address, both last night and this am: https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/H1000181760/CA?u=gale_new1&sid=bookmark-CA&xid=1b503887 It is probably one of the foremost sources for author bios. I have taken screen shots this am and can send them, if this helps. Here is more Gale detail: Gale Literature: Contemporary Authors (https://go.gale.com/ps/i.do?p=CA&u=gale_new1&id =GALE%7CH1000181760&v=2.1&it=r&sid=CA&asid=99d28b83). Farmington Hills, MI: Gale Publishing. 2018. ISBN 978-1410322852. Retrieved January 27, 2022. Hope this helps.Alpiner123 (talk) 09:36, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@BuySomeApples: Morning! Thanks for taking a look at it. I appreciate your comments. The article was up for a dozen years then removed for lack of citations 10/21. In those years, many links disappeared so I was adding citations based on hard copies I'd kept with dates and page numbers. Now, I realize sources cannot exist behind paywalls or in hard copy format. I guess I can’t supply jpegs of these. Such is our transient digital age. Ha! I do remember someone supplied copies of my old Eagle Scout certificate, which still exists in WikiMedia. Yes, thanks, I’d like to look at expanding the article a bit now, very judiciously, now that I know all this. I sincerely appreciate your continued help in the process and interest. It has been a long, strange trip. I’ll try to refine this a little daily, so we complete it soon.Alpiner123 (talk) 09:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi! I'm afraid you're still misunderstanding this. Paywall and offline are fine. You just need to provide enough information. For example what would we find at the Gale link if we can't access it. What newspaper would someone look for at the library if someone wanted to find an article about one of your trips. I don't know if your account is eligible for Wikipedia Library but that could also be a starting point.
- I don't think we need your Eagle Scout certificates. It's understandably important to you, but not something that's relevant to an article about you unless there was something specific in your project. Speaking for myself only here, but I'm always happy to help someone who is helping us, which you're definitely doing. Star Mississippi 14:20, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@BuySomeApples: Quick question to clarify: If I have a reputable newspaper/magazine source with author, title, date and page number (without a current link, or behind a paywall), do I need to delete it altogether? Just checking... Thanks. Alpiner123 (talk) 12:41, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Alpiner123: no, as @Curb Safe Charmer: has said offline sources are allowed as long as they're properly cited. A lot of reliable sources are either paywalled or aren't available online, which is OK. BuySomeApples (talk) 19:06, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
No. See WP:OFFLINE. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 13:04, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- Gale is now working. Thanks @Frietjes: for whatever you fixed Star Mississippi 16:50, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting out the Gale link @Frietjes:.
@BuySomeApples:@Star Mississippi:@Curb Safe Charmer: Thanks for the clarifications. Alpiner123 (talk) 09:28, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
@BuySomeApples: I’ve double-checked all citations and have noted page numbers, dates, pubs, etc. for all. Made minor additions, which you'd suggested earlier. I’m happy with main body now. I wonder if it’s best to leave “Media” as is, or attempt to add back part of what was originally there? (work in Arctic/tv/film/etc.) I always find it interesting to know what writers/actors/musicians did before they made a living in their art, (Vonnegut was in advertising, Hemingway drove ambulance in Spanish Civil War), but want this to remain encyclopaedic. Thoughts? Any interest in expanding Exploration into more that just Pilgrimage? Again, your call. BTW, I only include Eagle Scout since that started my interest in exploration and the outdoors; parents find that online and frequently ask me to send their sons an “attaboy,” which I gladly do. Thanks for your input! Alpiner123 (talk) 12:07, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
- I don't believe your ping to @BuySomeApples below worked since you forgot to sign the post. Pinging them here on your behalf @Alpiner123 Star Mississippi 14:52, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
@BuySomeApples: Morning. Following your earlier suggestion for Media, I was able to source more details and citations about writing in Alaska, keeping it short. Hope this works for you.Alpiner123 (talk) 15:55, 14 February 2022 (UTC) @BuySomeApples: I’ve added two maps for the Templar Trail and the map of the First Crusade. I’ve just about finished. Are we good to go? Thanks for a final look. Alpiner123 (talk) 15:55, 14 February 2022 (UTC) @Star Mississippi and BuySomeApples: Thanks Mississippi for forwarding the earlier message to @BuySomeApples. I added two maps to the writer article and also to the Templar Trail article. Also added country maps to the later, so people can get a clearer idea of the towns it crosses. Thanks to you both for your help. Alpiner123 (talk) 15:55, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you @Alpiner123 and Star Mississippi: this looks ready for publication. I made a few very minor edits (mostly formatting and minor copyedits) before publishing. - Wholeheartedly agree. Nicely done @Alpiner123 & @BuySomeApples. Mr. Wilson, if you have any questions I'm still watching your Talk and remain happy to help with any edit requests here too. Star Mississippi 02:39, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you @BuySomeApples and Star Mississippi: Thank you so much for your help. I’ve learned so much. Yes, I appreciate you've taken a look at Templar Trail. After what we built here, this one should be nearly ready to go. Alpiner123 (talk) 09:05, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@BuySomeApples and Star Mississippi: I just added two more printed book citations to verify the Knight Hospitaller reference, per request. BTW, I did not write the UTracks article. Hope this helps. Appreciate any assist you can give with the Templar Trail article so we can finish it. Thanks!Alpiner123 (talk) 21:34, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
Maps
[edit]Anyone good with image layout? I tried to fix the second map but instead of being bisected by the "Works" section header, there's now the white space. Is there a better way to solve, or live with the bisection? Star Mississippi 14:52, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Star Mississippi: I tried to move the images around a bit, and they look good on my end. BuySomeApples (talk) 01:32, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- Yep, much better layout. Thanks @BuySomeApples Star Mississippi 02:13, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
