The Wuxiang Pagoda, also known as the White Pagoda, is an imitation wooden pavilion-style brick tower located on Heming Mountain on the banks of the Jialing River in Gaoping District, Nanchong City, Sichuan Province. The date of completion is controversial, and may be late Tang, Five Dynasties, or Two Song Dynasty. On July 13, 1961, it was announced as the second batch of historical and revolutionary cultural relics protection units in Sichuan Province. On July 7, 1980, it was re-published as the first batch of cultural relics protection units in Sichuan Province. On May 25, 2006, the tower was announced as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units due to its "five generations to the early Song Dynasty brick structure with Tang Tower style, the earliest and largest in Sichuan Song Tower".
Year of construction
[edit]According to the architectural style, structure and decorative techniques of the pagoda, modern experts give different opinions on the construction of the pagoda from the late Tang Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty.
First, it was built in the late Tang Dynasty to the fifth generation: "From the appearance, the tower is quite Tang Tower style; the decorative details, the waist eaves carry the horizontal defense line concave, showing a beautiful curve. It is judged that Nanchong Bai Pagoda is not a tower of Northern Song Dynasty, it is an internal structure characteristic of Nanchong Bai Pagoda, which was built in the Tang and Song dynasties."
Second, it was built during the reign of King Taejo of the Northern Song Dynasty: According to the judgment that there is "Jianlong Manshou Pagoda" on the tenth-grade plaque on the east side of the tower, the "New Nanchong County Chronicle" was determined. This is the main point of view of the Nanchong White Tower.
Third, it was built in the middle and late Southern Song Dynasty, and it is more likely to be built around the middle and late Southern Song Dynasty, and it is more likely to be built around the middle and late Southern Song Dynasty.
Appearance
[edit]The White Tower is now built of stone, which was originally built as a shoumi seat, and is embossed with the Longlin design around it. The tower is built of blue brick, flat square, 13 stories high, 39.56 meters high. The tower is completely covered with gray and white, brick imitation wooden columns, bucket arches, and all the wood is coated with earth-yellow fuel, and copper bells are hung under the eaves of each tower.
It is made of iron, and is made of iron.
Each side of the eaves is brick with four pillars and three bays, the first floor with coupon doors from the west, the other three sides are niches, 2-10 floors with doors and windows open, doors and windows are mostly decorative niches.
The wall is made of brick imitation column and the wood structure is realistic, complicated and varied in 栱. The top of the column is obvious, 3 layers below the appendix is log-like, Shih four shops for 杪 or single, raised face for the piano surface, raised bottom winding, out batch of bamboo or jueh-tou style tricks. In particular, only the first layer is used as a universal taping, and the camel's hump is used as a supporting space, and the camel's hump carving is slightly complicated. Neither the appendix nor the general tap fang can begin.
Internal structure
[edit]There are two theories about the internal structure of the Nanchong White Tower: One is that "there are solid columns in the lower four levels of the tower, and brick steps can be circled between the columns and the tower body. In order to make the tower sunny, air circulation, easy for people to climb, but also in the relevant parts of the tower body built two circular and an irregular rectangular hole. Four or more levels of brick with "stacked astringent" top, you can climb up to the top of the tower with stacked astringent brick steps. In the lower part of the tower there is a solid chamber, with a folding stiletto in the wall, which can be circled upward, and more than five levels of bricks are piled up to the top, and can be followed up the steps. ”
The other is "level 1~5 masonry tower core column in the tower, in addition to the solid tower column, other levels belong to the tower ventricle column." Tower ventricle coupon arch, top of the four-A-type algal well. Climb up the brick steps along the outer wall of the tower, up to level 5. Level 5 tower ventricle top to level 10, hollow, large and small, empty cylinder type. Level 10 to 13 is solid."
Repair
[edit]There are four main repairs recorded in the White Tower: the restoration of the foundation and widening of the tread in 1641, the restoration of the base in 1981 and the replacement of the embossed Longlin pattern in four corners of it.
