William Henry Colledge (born January 23, 1962) is a Professor of Reproductive Physiology in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience (PDN) at the University of Cambridge.[1]

Career

[edit]

Prof. Colledge obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Imperial College in 1983. He then received his PhD in 1987 while working at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill through the University of London. After a post-doctoral position in Canada, he joined the laboratory of the Nobel Prize-winning, Professor Sir Martin Evans at Cambridge. During this time, Colledge established himself in reproductive research with current research focused on the neuroendocrine regulation of mammalian reproduction.[2] He is currently a Professor of Reproductive Physiology at the University of Cambridge, where has published over 172 scientific papers and reviews.[3] He is also joint head of the department.[4]

Discovery

[edit]

In recent years, Colledge and his team identified a G-protein coupled receptor (GPR54) that is a vital regulator of the mammalian reproductive axis. Mutant mice that lack GPR54 have immature reproductive organs and low levels of sex steroids and gonadotrophic hormones, but normal levels of GnRH in the hypothalamus. His team is currently mapping neuronal inputs to Kiss1 neurons using a transgenic mouse in which expression of CRE has been directed specifically to Kiss1 neurons.[5]
