WiQ Tech is a wholly owned subsidiary of Secure Energy Services. Wiqtech.ca is a Canadian technology company that specializes in software solutions for the energy and waste management industries. Founded in Calgary, Alberta, Wiqtech.ca offers a suite of digital tools designed to optimize logistics, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency for companies involved in hazardous waste management and transportation.
Controversy
[edit]In July 2021, Secure acquired Tervita after the expiry of the statutory waiting period and having defeated an emergency injunction application brought by the Commissioner to prevent closing of the Merger. Secure therefore closed “at risk” knowing that its ownership of the Tervita business would be subject to complex, ongoing litigation that could ultimately result in significant divestitures.
In March 2023, the Competition Tribunal ruled in favor of the Commissioner of Competition in his challenge of Secure Energy Services’ acquisition of Tervita Corporation. The Tribunal ordered Secure to sell 29 facilities to resolve the substantial lessening of competition found in 136 relevant markets.
Being that WiQ is a subsidiary of Secure and offers a data tracking service to their direct waste treatments competitors, there is concern that WiQ was developed as a way to maintain an information monopoly. Currently, WiQ's website makes no known mention of their affiliation with Secure Energy.
