Wei-Ying Ma is a prominent figure in the field of computer science, known for his substantial academic contributions and leadership in technological innovation. With over 300 papers authored and 169 patents obtained,[1] Ma has established himself as a key figure in the industry. His participation in conferences and editorial boards demonstrates his knowledge and impact in the field. Ma's engagement extends beyond academia. He was deeply involved with the International World Wide Web Conferences Steering Committee from 2010 to 2016 where he focused on the organization and promotion of global conferences. Additionally, his leadership at ByteDance as the Vice President and Head of the AI Lab played a crucial role in the development of AI-powered technologies integrated into platforms like Douyin, TikTok, and Jinri Toutiao, impacting digital content creation and the distribution landscape.

Education:

[edit]

Wei-Ying Ma began his academic journey by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan in 1990. He furthered his studies by earning a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1994 and 1997, respectively. During his doctoral studies, Ma was actively involved in the Alexandria Digital Library project, focusing on the development of innovative image retrieval systems and segmentation solutions.[2][3]

Career

[edit]

He began his professional career at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto, California, where he focused on multimedia content analysis and adaptation. Transitioning to Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) in 2001, Ma assumed leadership roles, including Assistant Managing Director, overseeing research groups that played a pivotal role in developing technologies for Microsoft's Bing Search Engine and Microsoft Advertising. He was a scientist of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and served on the editorial boards of the ACM Transactions on Information System (TOIS) and the ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal. He also served as a program co-chair of the International Conference on World Wide Web (WWW) 2008, a program co-chair of the Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM) '07, and the general co-chair of the Asia Information Retrieval Symposium (AIRS) '08. He held the position of general co-chair of ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (SIGIR) 2011. Wei-Ying Ma was also a member of the International World Wide Web Conferences Steering Committee from 2010 through 2016.[2]

In 2009, he received the Management Excellence Trailblazer Award at Microsoft, recognizing his contributions to advancing Management Excellence within the organization. His work included pioneering techniques for web page analysis using visual cues to extract structured data, leading to the development of Microsoft Academic Search, a search engine providing automatic entity summaries and enhanced user navigation. Additionally, he lead projects such as the Microsoft Graph Engine, facilitating knowledge graph processing for web search and natural language understanding, and the creation of the Microsoft Concept Graph, a comprehensive repository of concepts and facts derived from extensive web and search data. Furthermore, he lead developing the Distributed Machine Learning Toolkit, which improved the efficiency and scalability of machine learning tasks involving large datasets. [2]

ByteDance

[edit]

Wei-Ying Ma started his tenure at ByteDance in February 2017, assuming the position of Vice President and Head of the AI Lab.[4] During his time at ByteDance, Ma established the ByteDance AI Lab to focus on research and technology development in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and related fields. Under his guidance, the AI Lab contributed to the development of AI-powered content creation and dissemination technologies integrated into ByteDance's prominent products, including Douyin, TikTok, Jinri Toutiao, CapCut, and Lark. [1]

Throughout his tenure at ByteDance, Ma oversaw the recruitment of a substantial number of researchers and the establishment of labs in various global locations.[4] His accomplishments include the development of machine learning models for content analysis, video analysis systems, and innovative techniques for music generation, recommendation, speech recognition, and content creation.[2]

Ma's departure from ByteDance in 2020 coincided with regulatory challenges faced by TikTok on a global scale.[5]

Tsinghua University

[edit]

With ByteDance's international expansion plans on hold, Ma transitioned to AI Industry Research (AIR), a research institute under Tsinghua University in Beijing. This initiative, spearheaded by scientist and entrepreneur Dr. Ya-Qin Zhang, established a center dedicated to scientific research and technological innovation for the fourth industrial revolution, focusing on areas such as autonomous driving, AI+IoT, and neuromorphic computing. Ma, along with Zhang and Zhao Feng, former CTO of Haier, co-founded AIR. All are alumni of MSRA.[3]

Leading a team of faculties, Ma is spearheading AI initiatives for scientific applications, with a specific emphasis on AI-driven drug discovery and generative AI for biology and chemistry.[2] Additionally, Ma has co-founded Helixon, a startup dedicated to advancing next-generation AI for antibody design and protein therapeutics discovery. He also served as Director of the Health Computing Research Center at the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) from 2021 to 2023 advancing AI applications in healthcare. [6]

Awards

[edit]

Wei-Ying Ma has been recognized with several awards throughout his career. In 2010, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumni of the school of EECS at Tsinghua University.[2] His contributions to the field were further acknowledged when he received the ACM Distinguished Member award in the USA in 2010. In 2023, Wei-Ying Ma was recognized as an ACM Fellow in the USA for his leadership and significant contributions to web search and data mining.[7]

Additionally, for his work at ByteDance, Ma received the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award, a prestigious accolade in China.[2]
