The Waiahole Water Company was founded in 1911 after the Oahu Sugar Board proposal for connecting water tunnels in the Ko'olau mountains was passed. After gathering the needed supplies for digging, and hiring around 800 laborers, construction began. Completed on July 3rd, 1916, the water system would go on to be used until 1994, with the closure of the Oahu Sugar Company, amongst disputes in regards to water rights in the mountain range.
Equipment
[edit]Two two-truck shays were purchased from Lima Locomotive Works in 1911, and promptly named "Ditch" & "Tunnel". The railroad ran through a dense jungle switchback, starting with a floating pier at Waikane Landing, with the terminus ending at the portal to the tunnel 750 feet above sea level.
