History

[edit]

Vintage was founded in Israel in 2003 by Alan Feld. Shortly after inception, Abe Finkelstein and Amit Frenkel joined it.

In its first years Vintage invested in buying the holdings of disappointed investors who wanted to sell their technology holdings, after the Dot-com bubble burst. In its first decade, Vintage managed to raise a fund every 2 years, reaching a managed capital of $ 600 million in 2012.

Since 2014, Vintage has been launching a new fund approx. every year (see below for its funds list). As of November 2024 Vintage is managing nearly $ 4 billion in 16 funds.

Vintage has 3 distinct fund strategies:

  • Fund of funds - focusing on early stage VCs (with over $ 100 million).
  • Growth funds (VC funds) - looking for early growth startups (series B and beyond).
  • Secondary fund - investing in startups and funds at various stages.

At the beginning of 2024 and after researching successful generation transition in the VC industry,[1] Alan and Vintage decided that general partners who reach the age of 62 will not join new funds.

Among the funds Vintage invested are: a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Accel, 83 North, Battery Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Grove Ventures, and General Catalyst.[2]

Among the investors who invested in Vintage funds are insurance companies, pension funds, Investment houses, Academic institutions and family offices, from Israel, North America and European, including: Harel Group, Phoenix Financial, Menora Mivtachim Group, Clal Insurance Enterprises, Migdal Insurance, Meitav Investment House, Poalim Equity, Altshuler Shaham, Peakview Capital, Leumi Partners, More Investment House, AT Partners Japan Israel and Edward Grefenstette Kensington Capital Partners.

Vintage has a strategic advisory board including international figures from various fields, including: Arthur Stark (Former President of Bed Bath and Beyond), Andy Walter (Former SVP, Global Commercial Services at P&G), Amanda Parness (Former Managing Director at CDPQ), Dr. Samer Haj-Yehia (Former Group Executive Chairman of Bank Leumi) and Ambassador S.
