Vijaya Kolachalama is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine & Computer Science at Boston University.[1] He is a founding member of the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University. Before joining Boston University, he was a Principal Member of Technical Staff at Draper Laboratory and a Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT, where he also served as an ORISE Fellow at the US Food & Drug Administration.
His laboratory is at the forefront of efforts to integrate and unify diverse multimodal clinical data, ranging from imaging and laboratory results to patient histories and cognitive assessments. By leveraging these data streams, the lab is developing advanced AI-based assistive tools aimed at addressing the global shortage of neurologists. These tools are designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline workflows, and improve patient outcomes, particularly in underserved regions where access to neurological expertise is limited. Through this work, the lab aspires to bridge critical gaps in neurological care and make cutting-edge AI technologies widely accessible. His work has been published in reputed journals including Brain,[2] Circulation,[3] Nature Communications,[4] Nature Medicine,[5] and Neurology.[6]
Kolachalama authored some of the pioneering articles advocating for integrating machine learning education into medical[7] and pre-medical[8] curricula, emphasizing the importance of preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals for a data-driven future. He serves on the editorial board of Scientific Reports, Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and npj Biomedical Innovations.
