VTM NSS College
[edit]Velu Thampi Memorial Nair Service Society (VTM NSS) College[1], affiliated with the University of Kerala, is a beacon of the Nair Service Society’s unwavering commitment to education and social service. The college was established by the renowned social reformer, Indian freedom fighter and visionary Bharatha Kesari Padma Bhushan Mannathu Padmanabhan in 1964.
The college is a tribute to Thalakulathu Velu Thampi Dalawa, an Indian freedom fighter whose unwavering principles of valour, conviction, and patriotism continue to inspire generations. Nestled in a picturesque 19-acre campus atop Dhanuvachapuram hillock, a countryside of Neyyattinkara Taluk in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, the college offers a serene and inspiring setting for learning, conducive to intellectual growth and exploration.
History
[edit]VTM NSS College, founded by Bharatha Kesari Padma Bhushan Mannathu Padmanabhan, initiated its journey as a junior college on July 15, 1964 in a temporary building at a scenic mound in the village of Dhanuvachapuram, has now developed into a full-fledged first grade college. The college was upgraded in 1967 with the introduction of Undergraduate Degree Courses in English, History, Politics Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Commerce. Later in 1981, Economics and Botany programmes were approved to the college. Degree courses in Zoology and Malayalam were commenced in 1984 and 1995 respectively. The institution attained the status of a first-grade college when the Post Graduate course in Commerce was begun in 1981 followed by the Post Graduate course in English in 1998 and History in 1999.

The institution also honors its native sons, including Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai, a visionary writer and journalist, and Ayyankali, a social reformer who fought for the emancipation of the downtrodden. The nearby village of Aruvippuram, where Sree Narayana Guru erected a Shiva temple, defying casteism, adds to the college’s rich legacy, serving as a testament to the power of courage and conviction in its locale. Inspired by these visionaries, VTM NSS College remains dedicated to developing young minds from diverse and backward strata of the society.
