Untitled Hannibal movie is an upcoming American biographical film about the life of Carthaginian military general Hannibal. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by John Logan and starring Denzel Washington, it is set to be filmed for Netflix and produced by Fuqua and Washington.[1]
Cast
[edit]Premise
[edit]The film will cover the period lf time during the Second Punic War between the Roman Republic and Carthage. Hannibal invaded the Roman Empire through The Alps by using elephants. Under his lead, the Carthaginian army won key victories against the Romans, allowing Carthage to occupy the majority of southern Italy for a number of years before eventually, being defeated at the Battle of Zama after the Romans counter-invaded North Africa and sacked Carthage.[3]
Production
[edit]In November 2023, Fuqua and Washington were set to produce the project for Netflix, alongside Erik Olsen and Adam Goldworm, with Jeremy Lott and Frank Moll as executive producers. Fuqua’s production company Hill District Media have a first look agreement with Netflix.[4] Washington reportedly has a long standing interest in the subject matter and was inked to the role over 20 years previously when 20th Century Fox were looking at producing a Hannibal film. Vin Diesel had also been linked to the role.[5]
Filming is expected to start in 2024, with Tunisian culture secretary Hayet Ketat Guermazi welcoming the project saying that the "important thing was that Netflix shot some of the film in Tunisia". This came following some objections from inside the country over Washington's relative age and ethnicity compared to what is known of Hannibal as a historical figure.[6]
