Tropical Storm Patty was a tropical cyclone in November 2024. The sixteenth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Patty originated from a non-tropical low in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, and was classified as a subtropical storm on November 2. After traversing the Azores, it briefly became fully tropical, before degenerating into a remnant low on November 4.
Meteorological history
[edit]On October 30, a storm-force non-tropical low located about 550 mi (890 km) west of the western Azores began producing showers and thunderstorms near its center.[1] Two days later, it began producing convection near the center.[2] Sea surface temperatures were around 70 °F (21 °C), lower than expected for tropical cyclogenesis. Even so, the system acquired subtropical characteristics on November 2, and was designated Subtropical Storm Patty.[3] Patty strengthened to 65 mph (100 km/h) later that day, on its approach toward the Azores.[4] After passing through the Azores, the subtropical storm weakened to 45 mph (70 km/h) in the afternoon of November 3.[5] As it continued weakening, however, Patty transitioned into a tropical storm overnight.[6] Then, on the morning of November 4, the storm degenerated into a remnant low while moving away from the Azores, as its low-level center had become elongated, and opened into a trough.[7]
Preparations and impact
[edit]The Azores Meteorological Service issued a tropical storm warning for the entirety of the Azores.[8][9] Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera issued a yellow warning in regards to rainfall for the eastern islands and an orange warning for the central and western islands.[10][11]
