Tor Frømyhr (born 30 October 1953) is an Australian violinist and violist. He was Senior Lecturer in Performance and previously the Head of Strings at the ANU School of Music until 2024.
Biography
[edit]Frømyhr was born to an Australian mother and a Norwegian father. He holds Indigenous heritage, specific to Yuin country.
Frømyhr studied with renowned Czech-Australian violinist Jan Sedivka at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in Hobart. After completing undergraduate studies, he was awarded a scholarship by the Australia Council (now known as Creative Australia) to pursue postgraduate study. In addition to his postgraduate studies, he conducted the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra.
In 1980, Frømyhr relocated to Brisbane to teach at the University of Queensland and conducted the Queensland Youth Orchestra. After many years of service, he was made an honorary life member by the organisation.
Frømyhr has achieved notable positions as a soloist and concertmaster with well-known Australian orchestras, including being the Associate Concertmaster of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Principal Viola of Queensland Philharmonic and Canberra Symphony Orchestra, as well as concertmaster at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 12 years.
In addition to his contributions to Australian orchestras, Frømyhr has performed in festivals around Australia, the United States of America, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Scandinavian nations.
