Tobi Shogi[1] is a shogi variant in which 2 players use only pawns. This game is noted down in the 1904 World Game Law Encyclopaedia.[2] It is likely that this game came about during the Edo period but it is not confirmed when this game first was played.
Equipment

- 18 Pawn Pieces
Rules
[edit]Pieces are laid out as below:
9 | と | と | と | ||||||
8 | と | と | と | ||||||
7 | と | と | と | ||||||
6 | |||||||||
5 | |||||||||
4 | |||||||||
3 | 歩 | 歩 | 歩 | ||||||
2 | 歩 | 歩 | 歩 | ||||||
1 | 歩 | 歩 | 歩 | ||||||

One side is represented by unpromoted pawns and the other with promoted pawns.
Each turn a player takes they must move a piece forward by 1 square.
If there are pieces in front of the chosen piece, that pawn will instead jump forward however many squares it is until the next open square is met.
You may not jump your own pawn multiple times over your own pieces however you may do this to enemy pawns so long as they occupy the space directly in front of the first square your piece lands on.
A player wins once they are able to put all their pieces in the starting position their opponent held at the beginning of the game.
