The Timur's campaign against the Abaza and Circassians was a military invasion led by Timur against the peoples of the North Caucasus, including the Abaza and Circassians. The campaign resulted in widespread devastation, significant loss of life, and reinforced Timur's power in the region.[1]
Background
[edit]At the time, the North Caucasus was a relatively independent region inhabited by resilient, free-spirited peoples. In 1395, after a series of successful campaigns in Transcaucasia, Timur directed his forces northward to subjugate the Caucasian highlanders.[2]
Events
[edit]Timur's forces swept through the North Caucasus, devastating settlements, destroying villages and towns, and killing local inhabitants. Many highlanders were forced to seek refuge in the rugged mountains. According to chronicles, Timur "devastated the Circassian ulus (territory)."[3] His goal was not only territorial expansion but also the destruction of the local population.[4]
Outcome and Consequences
[edit]Timur’s campaign resulted in massive destruction and heavy casualties among the Abaza and Circassian peoples. Historians note that the effects were long-lasting, with significant demographic and cultural losses for the North Caucasus highlanders. The campaign was one of the most devastating invasions of the region, as Timur aimed to not only conquer but also to eliminate much of the population.[5]
