Tiffany Monique James (born November 25, 1994) is an American investor and entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of Modern Blk Girl. She is most notable for turning her initial investment of $10,000 into more than $2 million by adding several long-term growth companies, semiconductor chip stocks, and other investments.[1]

Early life

[edit]

A daughter of Jamaican and Haitian immigrants. Her father drove taxis and owned a taxi company until Uber cannibalized his business, and her mother worked in childcare.[2] James is a graduate of Rutgers University, where she earned a degree in computer science.[3]

In 2019, James was working in the fashion and hospitality industries in New York City when she first opened a brokerage account.[4]

Business career

[edit]

Modern Blk Girl

[edit]

In 2020, the platform first launched on Clubhouse with 500 users but that number has since climbed to over 200,000.[5] James and COO, Sharlea Brookes found social refuge in the audio-only app, Clubhouse. The two investors weren’t strangers for long after learning they shared the same hometown.[6] Modern Blk Girl grew into a stand-alone wealth building platform for women of color with a mission to educate women about how money works and help close the wealth gap amongst genders across the globe.[7] James created Teen University, a four-week, accelerated financial literacy program for young women ages 14 to 19, teaches how to invest in and navigate the stock market.[8] MBG has already helped women of color earn more than $3.5 million in the stock market.[9]

Investments

[edit]

In 2015, James learned about the earning potential of the stock market after attending a conference with her mom, but she didn’t have the funds or the knowledge to make any significant investments. By 2016, as she started her career, she used money from her salary in events and hospitality to make small investments.[10]

In 2019, James followed a friend’s advice to invest in Tesla stock. When the brand’s valuation skyrocketed in 2020, James’ $10,000 investment grew to over $2 million. James had planned to use some of those earnings to start a candle brand.[11] James added a mix of long-term growth companies, S&P SPDR exchange-traded funds and semiconductor chip stocks among other investments (she still owns some Tesla).[12] James has also continued to grow her personal investments, pulling in $4.3 million in a bear market.[13]

Awards and honors

[edit]

In 2022, James was named the recipient of the Rising Star Award for The Motley Fool’s Women in Investing.[14]
