The Wizard of the Emerald City (Russian: Волшебник Изумрудного города. Дорога из жёлтого кирпича, lit.'The Wizard of the Emerald City. The Yellow Brick Road') is an upcoming 2025 Russian adventure fantasy blockbuster film directed by Igor Voloshin. It is based on the eponymous 1939 Russian book by Alexander Volkov[a].[1][2]

Plot

[edit]

Swept by a hurricane into a magical and unknown world, Ellie and her new friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, set off for the Emerald City in search of the Wizard who will grant their cherished wishes.

Cast

[edit]
  • Denis Vlasenko as the voice of Totoshka, Ellie's dog, who talks when he arrives in the Magic Land.
  • Evgeniy Chumak as the Bogeyman, a living scarecrow missing a brain.
  • Arthur Vakha as the voice of the Cowardly Lion, a talking lion without courage.
  • Dmitry Chebotarev as Urfin Jus, a carpenter who uses magical means to attempt to seize power in the Magic Land.[b]
  • Yana Sexte as the voice of Ramina, the Queen of the Field Mice.
  • Alexandra Bogdanova as Vilina, the Sorceress of Yellow Land.

Production

[edit]

Plans to create a new adaptation of Alexander Volkov's The Wizard of the Emerald City emerged in April 2022, when the film project was presented to the Russian Minister of Culture. Igor Voloshin was tired as the director, and production was undertaken by Central Partnership, in collaboration with Kinoslovo, the production company of Russian producer Petr Anurov. The project received state funding.[3][4]

Filming took place from June 2023 to July 2024.[5]

The film uses a lot of expensive CGI and visual effects, which were provided by the Russian studio CGF.[citation needed]

Release

[edit]

The film was originally scheduled to be released on December 26, 2024, but was later postponed to January 1, 2025.[6]

It will be theatrically released in Russia by Central Partnership and later on the video on demand streaming service by Kinopoisk. It will also be released in theaters in Mexico by Corazón Films, in Brazil by Imagem Filmes, in Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, and may have a later wider release.[citation needed]
