The Ugly Chickens is a 29-minute dramatic short film directed by Mark Raso, released in 2024. This co-production between Canada, the United States, and Switzerland is an adaptation of Howard Waldrop's short story of the same name. The film stars Felicia Day as Paula Linberl, an ornithology professor embarking on a cross-country journey to investigate whether the supposedly extinct dodo bird might still exist.

The film premiered at the HollyShorts Film Festival on August 8, 2024, and was shot on location in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Plot

Upon learning that the supposedly extinct dodo bird might still exist, ornithology UT Austin professor Paula Linberl, embarks on a cross-country expedition to unravel the mystery. Her first stop is in Mississippi, where she stumbles upon an unexpected discovery – fragments of a dodo beak that ignite her passion for the elusive 'ugly chickens.' With newfound hope, Paula follows a cryptic lead to Memphis, where rumors of a family having seen the dodo circulate. However, her search takes an unexpected turn when the woman she meets in Memphis directs her to her estranged sister, living in the remote Florida Keys. Undeterred, Paula goes to the Keys, where, an unexpected surprise awaits her.[1]

Production

CLODAGH was produced by Afternoon Pictures, a co-founded independent production company by Michael Lindley and Portia A. Buckley. the company aims to "bring original stories of life in contemporary Britain and Ireland to the big screen".

"The story was inspired by an archival video of a priest’s housekeeper, which we saw on an old RTE clip."

The film’s distribution is managed by Salaud Morisset, based in Berlin, Germany.

The world premiere of CLODAGH took place at the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival in 2024. The sort movie is qualified for consideration for the Oscars 2024.[2]
