The Toy Book is an American digital and print magazine focusing primarily on the toy, game, entertainment, and licensing industries. It was founded in 1984 as a trade magazine serving the toy industry and its partners in the U.S. and Canada. Its first print issue debuted at the North American International Toy Fair in February 1985.

The magazine and its editorial team are publication partners for many major industry events, including Toy Fair, Licensing Expo, ASTRA Marketplace & Academy, and others.[1]

Editions

[edit]

Print

[edit]

The print edition of The Toy Book includes features, interviews, and profiles pertaining to the current issues and trends impacting the global toy industry. Topics include retail, legal, licensing, new properties, and more.[2] Additionally, each issue includes new product showcases aimed at retail buyers. The categories vary by issue theme and span nearly two dozen subcategories within a toy department.[3] The first issue of each volume is known as The BIG Toy Book and typically debuts at Toy Fair New York.

Website

[edit]

The Toy Book website launched in 2000 with the tagline "Serving the Global Marketplace."[4] Additional taglines have included "A Toy Department in Print" and "The Pulse of Play." The website is updated daily with news and features.

The Toy Report

[edit]

The Toy Report is a weekly newsletter featuring the biggest stories published the previous week. It was mailed to readers in the 1980s and later sent via fax. At some point in the aughts, it became an e-newsletter.

Sister Publications

[edit]

Over the past 40 years, The Toy Book has had several sister publications, including The Licensing Book, Specialty Toys & Gifts, and The Halloween Insider.[5] It currently has two closely linked consumer-facing sister publications, The Toy Insider (2005) and The Pop Insider (2018).[6][7]

[edit]

The Toy Book has been mentioned on The Drew Barrymore Show and seen in shows like The Sopranos.[8] Its editorial team is also regularly seen in talking head segments on major TV networks and appears as guests on programs, including History Channel's Modern Marvels and The Toys That Built America, The Toys That Made Us on Netflix, and 80s Top 10 on Disney+.[9][10]

Members of The Toy Book editorial team frequently lend their voices to industry-related stories covered by mainstream media outlets. Some examples include the 2024 controversy involving misprinted packages for Mattel's Wicked-inspired doll collection [11], the 2020 LEGO marketing pause on certain sets following the death of George Floyd, [12] and the fall 2024 East Coast and Gulf Coast Port Strikes, [13] and the 30th anniversary of Spin Master.
