The Toxhards are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2018. The band's lineup consists of founding members Casey Donovan (drums), Alan Macchiarolo (vocals, bass guitar), Emerson Harris (guitar, backing vocals), and additional member Matt Garcia (guitar, vocals) later in 2019. Since their formation, they have found success in online-specific spaces like TikTok and Instagram, especially with their biggest hit Ængus, The Prize Winning Hog, garnering over 20 million views across both platforms. Their live performances consist of t-shirt tosses, members dressed in inflatable pig suits, live gimmicks and antics, and theatrical mosh pits.

History

[edit]

Formation (2018)

[edit]

Members of the group had previously performed in bands in their high schools, with Casey having a band under the name 'Yesterday's Tomorrow' and Alan with 'No Soliciting'. The Toxhards were initially created when Donovan, Macchiarolo, and Harris attended Chapman University, where they all were in the theatre club, known as 'The Players Society'[1] They performed such musical performances as Pink Floyd's The Wall, Spy Kids: The Musical, and Richard Nixon's Big Adventure. This club was unique for the fact that it was mostly student-written material. They realized their musical talents and turned to the formation of a band, and began playing performances in July of 2018 where they strictly played cover songs, with their first show coming on the 28th of July, 2018.[2]

First Shows and Commerical Debut (2019)

[edit]

Eventually, the group began writing and performing their own music in these live shows. They slowly started to phase out cover songs for their own music, with their first major performance of their own music coming in their November 16th, 2019 concert, where they performed many of the songs they would later release as a collective live album named "Live! at the ToxHarvest". This concert was advertised as the ToxHarvest: A Spooky Toxhard Thanksgiving. They would continue performing their original songs throughout 2019, mixing in covers, and developing stage presence along the way.

By 2020, they would begin performing nearly only original songs, with a release of the live album, as well as a single with two songs (Out of the City, Be My Chompy). They released the song "How Lucky Am I?" on October 29th, 2019, with heavy promotional content across social media, garnering more popularity, with the song reaching 100,000 streams on Spotify in less than two months. They performed this song live (amongst other songs) at The Mint on February 5th and February 25th of 2022.

Ængus, The Prize Winning Hog and Internet Success (2022)

[edit]

After moderate success from their previous single, they released "OxyCotin" as a single on February 25th, 2022. This song would generate relative success, and would be added to their concerts they played sporadically throughout the rest of 2022. They would go on to release another single "Out of the City / Bye Bye Baby" on June 17th, 2022. By this point, they were performing concerts regularly, and were finding ground as a band.

From July 2022 to the point of release, they had been performing one of their fan-favorite songs "Ængus, The Prize Winning Hog", which including theatrics like band members dressing as Ængus (donning an inflatable pig suit), and performances on stage where members of the band dressed as butchers would "kill" Ængus. They would have these butchers dance and mosh in the mosh pits, adding to the metal-sounding record of the same name. On September 2nd, 2022, the band released "Ængus, The Prize Winning Hog", which thrusted the band into a more popular spotlight online.

There would be heavy usage of the song on TikTok and Instagram as backings for videos, with the band releasing a full music video for the song as well. This would be aided by a release of a video on Instagram showing the "killing" of Ængus, recorded from one of their shows, that boasted well over 20,000 likes and hundreds of thousands of views.

They would release more singles such as "Doombop!" on February 23rd, 2023, followed by (The) Coffee Song and October (September 22nd) as a single. Doombop would garner massive results, gaining popularity again on internet spaces, with the song tallying well over 200,000 as of November 2024. In 2024, they released two singles in "Should We Get A Dog?" and "The Butcherman's Lament".

Debut Album (2025)

[edit]

The makings of the album titled "Your Neighborhood" had been in the works for years, with the members of the band discussing it for a while. The band released a promotional single off the album titled "Satan's Little Hellsong" on September 13th, 2024.

In an interview with KXLU, Macchiarolo stated (about the album) "It’s a concept record that’s basically a near death experience, the entire first half is a guy listening to the radio and the songs that he hears are the songs on the album. But then he gets in a car accident, and the entire second half of the record is that near death experience playing out, you know, what would be in real life, just a split second, it plays out over the entire second side."[3]
