The story follows the journey of Duanwu, a pearl diver, who escapes her oppressive life in the pearl farm to avoid humiliation. Along the way, she meets Yan Zijin, a merchant from the Western Regions, and Zhang Jinran, a noble and refined gentleman. Together, they embark on a westward journey to pursue trade. Amidst turbulent times, Duanwu defies fate and grows into a legendary businesswoman through resilience and determination.
The series premiered exclusively on Youku [1] on November 1, 2024, and was subsequently broadcast on Dragon TV, Jiangsu Satellite TV, Beijing Satellite TV, and Netflix [2] on November 5, 2024. By November 3, 2024, just two days after its release, the drama’s popularity on Youku surpassed 10,000 in heat index, setting a record for the fastest drama to achieve this milestone on the platform in 2024. As of November 8, it topped Netflix’s Taiwan drama chart for two consecutive days.

However, during her trip to the northwest, she unravels the secrets of her life and gets entangled in Yan Zi Jing's quest for revenge. She experiences the loss of close relatives and betrayal by her beloved.
Renamed Su Mu Zhe (Zhao Lusi), Duan Wu courageously ventures into Yangzhou in pursuit of the truth, refusing to be consumed by hatred. Letting go of the past, she teams up with Zhang Jin Ran and confronts fierce struggles together with Yan Zi Jing, who initially planned to bear the burden of stigma and hatred alone, but finally finds solace in his heart and eases his knot.

Production
[edit]Scriptwriting
[edit]Director Xie Ze stated that the heroine’s character was designed to reflect a realistic growth trajectory. She begins as a soulless figure—a slave with no direction in life—but gradually finds purpose as she seeks a better life. Her journey evolves into building a career and helping others, making her relatable and grounded for the audience. The play incorporates multiple storylines, including revenge, entrepreneurship, power struggles, and personal growth. Each character has a unique arc, with their stories interwoven to create a complex and engaging narrative.
Location Shooting
[edit]For a realistic underwater world, the crew used a swimming pool, raising its depth to 5 meters and covering the bottom with sea sand transported from Hepu to recreate the seabed. To maintain water quality and ensure actor safety, the water was changed every two days. A small boat was dismantled and rebuilt as a larger ship for filming. The design of the bottom cabin, reflecting the cramped quarters of slaves, prioritized historical realism over comfort. The slaves’ living conditions were intentionally portrayed as harsh, with limited space and basic accommodations, to immerse the audience in the hardships of the time.
Shooting Process
[edit]Filming began on November 17, 2023, at Hengdian World Studios and officially wrapped on March 16, 2024. This meticulous production effort, combining historical accuracy and emotional depth, brings to life the struggles and triumphs of the characters in the context of ancient China’s vibrant trade and cultural exchanges.
